Bird City Algoma

Algoma, Wisconsin

Bird City Wisconsin
Algoma is a “Bird City Wisconsin.”

Whether you are an avid birdwatcher or a beginner, Algoma is a great destination, throughout the year, for both birds and birders.  From Lake Michigan, to forests, to meadows, to urban parks, the area is uniquely suited to diversity.

Summer sightings range from the tiny ruby throated hummingbirds to huge white pelicans (frequent visitors near Crescent Beach).  Woodland birds can be found in local parks or along the Ahnapee Trail.

During winter Lake Michigan rarely freezes and there are plenty of opportunities to see mergansers, golden eye, buffleheads, greater scaup, and long tailed ducks.  Bald eagles are common winter residents.  Look closely at those winter flocks of “sparrows” just out of town.  They could be horned larks, snow buntings, or Lapland longspurs.

We’re pleased that Algoma has been designated as a “Bird City!"

The Bird City Algoma Committee formed in April 2012 to work with the City of Algoma to achieve Bird City Wisconsin status. Algoma was officially recognized as a Bird City Wisconsin on May 4, 2013. Our volunteer group continues to support Algoma’s Bird City status by sponsoring projects, offering educational programs and sharing information about birding and healthy bird habitat.

For tips on how you can create or improve bird habitat check out the 'Best Practices' section of the Bird City Wisconsin website.  http://www.birdcitywisconsin.org/
